In order to understand why the farmers tortured this defeated Samurai, it could be down to history that during Sengoku period, enemy soldiers would tend to burn, loot and kill the opposing force surrounding villages to deprive their resource, like rice. Usually after a big battle and the losing side that managed to survive tend to fight off looting farmers who will go to the battlefield to see any valuables, namely swords or armor and then try to sell it. Usually farmers tend to have a pend up hatred to the samurai or anybody who is in the military. So if they see a straggling enemy soldier in the field they would usually kill him. Or if they see the soldier was from their own has been Daimyo samurai, they also can now let go of their pend up anger and kill and beat up the samurai who been antagonized them for years like rice tax or forced recruitment
